In this masterclass, we'll cover:

TOPIC 1: WHAT ARE YOU STRETCHING?

A LOOK INSIDE

Take a look inside your body to learn what you are stretching and how that can vary from your body to your aerial bestie's.

No bones about it, this module includes:

  • A 30-minute crash course on muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, viscera (organs), lymph, and nerves so you better understand what you are doing and feeling when you stretch.
  • A discussion of hypermobility spectrum disorders, how they present in the body, and what is happening inside.
  • A series of exercises that will help you decide which types of structures are creating stiffness in your body. 

After this section, you'll understand what flexibility is and what flexibility is not.

TOPIC 2: HOW DO YOU CREATE LASTING CHANGE?

LET'S LOAD IT

Next, I’ll explain how flexibility training IS strength training, and help you create a realistic timeline for your dream bendz.

This module includes:

  • A 30-minute primer on the stretch reflex and how to effectively load tissues.
  • A series of exercises that will help you understand how to progressively overload your tissues to gain strength and range of motion.

After this section, you’ll be able to create your own exercises specifically designed to increase your flexibility.

TOPIC 3: IS YOUR NERVOUS SYSTEM HOLDING YOU BACK?

THE SAFETY DANCE

If only simply loading appropriately were enough! Your brain still has to allow the body to feel safe enough to perform the movement. So I’ll go through how you can create proof for the brain that the movements are safe and useful.

This module includes:

  • A 30-minute exploration of general nervous system up and down regulation as it relates specifically to flexibility.
  • A series of drills to help you decide if you need up or down regulation to access greater range of motion.

After this module, you’ll be able to diagnose your nervous system and be able to put drills into your warmup to quickly increase your body's range of motion.

TOPIC 4: AM I A SNOWFLAKE?

IT'S ALL IN YOUR HEAD

Now you have all the major pieces of the puzzle, but you still might not have exactly what will work for your body. In this last session, we'll continue the safety dance and dive deeper into the science of the brain.

This section includes:

  • A 30-minute discussion of the eyes, vestibular system, and other senses and nerve roots that can cause tension in your body.

By the end of this piece, you'll have an expanded toolkit for addressing pesky restrictions in range of motion to add to your warmups and as movement snacks throughout your day. 

HI, I'M JESSICA!

I stumbled upon aerial as an adult, and I was hooked from my first silks class. But a series of injuries early in my journey led me to investigate a better way of both preparing the body for circus work.

I remember sitting in the world's best circus schools, enduring coaches pushing my legs to the floor--just like they did when I was a 15 year old dancer--and struggling to understand how in 20 years so little had changed. 

I realized that if I wanted to do better for my body, I was going to have to find it on my own. I eventually became a Gyrotonic and a Gyrokinesis trainer, spending thousands of hours studying with master trainers and working with clients in a rehabilitative setting. I saw how movement and breath could move people out of pain and into more easeful movement, and I was eager to apply those principles to mobility work.

I now work with circus artists across the globe to level up their skills and increase their longevity. My signature methodology features mobility as a component of each training session. I believe appeasing nervous system is at the core of flexibility and control in the air.
